My newly burnt CD with the Arch Linux image inserted into the drive, I was ready to install the core Arch system.
Remember that these steps apply only to my setup, so don’t use them literaly. Use them to learn how I set up my system, and then figure out what you need to change to set up yours.
- Boot from the installation CD.
- Choose “Boot Arch Linux Live CD“
- Login as “root” (write “root” and press enter)
- Begin installation (write “/arch/setup” and press enter)
- Click OK
- Choose “Select Source“
- Since I’m using the Core image, I choose “cd” as installation source
- Click OK to acknowledge
- Choose “Set clock“
- Choose “Select region and timezone“
- Press “e” (should jump down to “Europe”) and press enter
- Press “o” (should jump down to “Oslo”) and press enter
- Choose “Set time and date“
- Choose “UTC“
- Time looks ok, choose “return“
- Choose “Return to Main Menu“
- Choose “Prepare Hard Drive(s)“
- Choose “Auto-Prepare…“
- Accept default value of 100MB for the /boot partition. Press enter to continue.
- Write “4644” in the disk space field to set the swap partition, and press enter.
- Write “15000” in the disk space field to set the / partition, and press enter.
- Choose Yes to use the rest of the space for the /home partition.
- Choose “ext4 – Ext4” and press enter
- Confirm by choosing Yes
- When Auto-prepare finnish, click OK
- Choose “Return to Main Menu“
- Choose “Select Packages“
- Press enter
- Add the “base-devel” group (press space) and press enter
- Add the following packages: iwlwifi-4965-ucode, netcfg, sudo and wireless_tools
- Press OK to continue
- Choose “Install Packages“
- Press OK to continue
- When the installation is finnished, press Continue
- Choose “Configure System“
- Choose “nano“
- Choose “/etc/rc.conf System Config“
- Change KEYMAP=”us” to KEYMAP=”no-latin1“
- Change HOSTNAME=”myhost” to HOSTNAME=”hostname”
- Change DAEMONS=(syslog-ng network netfs crond) to DAEMONS=(syslog-ng @network netfs crond)
- Save by pressing Ctrl+o (that’s the letter, not the number) and press enter
- Close the file by pressing Ctrl+x and enter
- Choose “/etc/locale.gen Glibc Locales“
- Uncomment out “nb_NO.UTF-8 UTF-8” and “nb_NO ISO8859-1” by removing the # character before each line
- Save and quit to return to the menu again
- Choose “etc/pacman.d/mirrorlist Pacman Mirror List“
- Scroll down to “#Norway” and ucomment out “Server = http://mirror.archlinux.no/$repo/os/i686“
- Save and close the file
- Choose “Root-Password Set the root password” and enter (twice) your choosen root password
- Choose “Done“
- Choose “Install Bootloader“
- Choose “Grub Use the GRUB bootloader (default)“
- Press OK
- Find the kernel line for the first grub entry and add “quiet” just before “ro”
- Save and quit
- Press enter to choose to install the bootloader at /dev/sda
- Press OK
- Choose “Exit Install“
- Press OK
- Type “reboot” and press enter, and remove the CD during the reboot process
Congratulations. You have just installed Arch Linux. When the computer gives you the login prompt, enter “root” as username and the root password to log in.
